What Is A Termination of Employment?


Termination of employment is an operation of being fired from your job. Being terminated from your work means that you don’t work inside the company or the organization anymore.

What are the types of termination of employment?

There are two types from terminations:

1Involuntary: The termination of employment becomes accidental when the employer terminates an employee.  It might happen if the organization eliminates or lay off employees due to circumstances which are beyond the control of the employee.       

2Voluntary: A decision taken by the employee is a voluntary termination of employment, it includes retirement and resignation.

What are the steps of termination of employment?

1-Let the employee know where they stand

An employee should not be surprised if he or she gets fired, whether the employee is not performing to the standard or not working well within their team as they occur, you need to be clear on problems. You have to take notes so that you can include detailed information on problems such as customer concerns, disrespectful conduct at meetings missed deadlines, or failure to reach sales goals. Meet the employee and give examples of performance or behavior problems.

2-Develop improvement plan and timeline

You should develop an improvement plan with the employee and create an action plan, set realistic goals that are measurable.

3-Prepare documentation

Have the documentation or the paperwork available if the employee fails to change and to be fired. You must prepare a written termination notice and decide if a notice period is required.

Calculate the appropriate severance depending on the employee’s total pay received after termination. When you have an employee contract, it is a good idea to verify whether a termination clause settles the issue.

The severance depends on various factors including the circumstances surrounding the hiring and dismissal, the age and experience of the employee, the job held, and the duration of the service with the company.

The severance can never be less than the minimum. So checking with lawyer or human resources professional is also preferable.

4-Hold a face-to-face meeting

When you terminate an employee, never do this by e-mail or through phone it must be face to face.

5-Allow the employee to leave with dignity

Depending on the case, the employee can be asked to quit work immediately after the dismissal or be forced to work a period of the termination notice.

You will ensure that the fired employee can leave with dignity. There is typically no excuse for example to profit a leaving employee from personally packing up his or her belonging and saying goodbye to colleagues and there is definitely no need under normal circumstances for a security guard or supervisor to have someone escorted to the entrance.

In addition, if you have made a severance package to the employee, he or she should be given time to review the details that you received you shouldn’t expect the individual to respond immediately but you should give them at least a few days to review the information, communicate with their therapist and get back to you.

What happens after termination?

When an employee is fired they may receive other forms of payments:

  1. Unemployed:  Having been fired, your ability to receive unemployment and other benefits can depend on the reasons given for your dismissal as well as your state. If you‘re fired you might not be able to receive unemployment benefits.
  2. Severance pay: Some companies may offer severance pay particularly if the dismissal is due to changes in the company such as restructuring or downsizing.
  3. Dismissal compensation: Many companies include dismissal compensation in their employee handbook. Some provide weekly compensation with a cap or limit on profit for varying weeks. Others will offer a lump sum payment, there is no obligation to pay unless you are protected by a contract or employment agreement that provides for it.
  4. Health care: You may be able to maintain the community insurance benefits following a work loss for a period of time.


  • The employee must take care to know why he got terminated to improve himself in the future.
  • The employee must take all his money and his benefits and he can take an experience certificate that proves that he was working in this company.
  • He must take all his paper before leaving and leaving in a good way without any problems.
